Overview
Microporous is the most requested specialist high-temperature material in NCR after ceramic fibre: furnace makers in Faridabad and Ballabgarh use it to reach a cold-face temperature that ceramic fibre alone cannot, aluminium and steel plants use it behind ladle and tundish linings, and fire-door and lift-door makers use it as a thin, rigid core. What is microporous insulation?
A compacted fumed-silica board whose pores are smaller than the mean free path of air, giving thermal conductivity below still air — the lowest of any high-temperature insulation.
Where is microporous used in a furnace?
As the back-up layer behind ceramic fibre or brick to bring the shell temperature down without adding thickness; 10–25 mm of microporous often replaces 50–75 mm of calcium silicate.
