What is mica insulation?
Mica insulation is electrical and thermal insulation made from mica, a naturally layered silicate mineral with very high dielectric strength, high arc resistance and stability far above the limit of organic laminates. WedgeMICA products convert muscovite, phlogopite and synthetic mica into boards, sheets, rolls, tubes, gaskets and machined parts, bonded with silicone resin for heat duty.
What temperature can mica insulation withstand?
WedgeMICA grades are rated by continuous temperature index: muscovite to 550 °C, phlogopite to 800 °C and synthetic mica to 1100 °C for rigid boards, heater plates and tubes. Flexible mica sheets are rated to 500 °C (muscovite) and 600 °C (phlogopite).
What is the difference between muscovite and phlogopite mica?
Muscovite (cream or ruby) has the best electrical and mechanical strength and the lowest dielectric loss, and is first choice for switchgear, busbar and arc-barrier parts up to 550 °C. Phlogopite (amber-brown) has higher heat resistance, is softer to machine, and is the standard for induction furnace, EAF / LF and smelting insulation up to 800 °C.
Which mica insulation is used in induction furnaces?
Induction furnaces use WMB-P800 phlogopite rigid board and WMT-P800 tubes for coil supports, spacers and top and bottom panels, and WMR-GMG, WMR-GM or WMR-CM mica rolls as the slip plane between crucible and coil.
