What is passive fire protection?

Passive fire protection is the built-in part of a building’s fire safety: fire doors, fire-resistant boards, fire-rated walls, ceilings and partitions, and seals around every gap and service penetration that keep a fire and its smoke inside one compartment for a rated time — 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. Unlike sprinklers and alarms (active fire protection), passive fire protection needs no power or trigger. It protects escape routes and structure while people evacuate and fire crews respond.

Every element must be rated as part of a tested assembly. A fire door is only as good as its core board, infill and intumescent seals; a fire-rated wall fails if a cable hole through it is left open. Wedge supplies each layer so the whole fire protection system matches the rating on the drawing.

Ratings are for the tested assembly, not a single component. Each order is quoted against the assembly, substrate and service, with data sheets.

Fire protection heat shield partition wall case study: calcium silicate and aerogel layers cut surface temperature

Fire protection for walls, ceilings, doors and penetrations

Fire walls and partitions

Two layers of calcium silicate or MgO board each side of a steel stud, mineral wool infill, sealed head and base. Read our 600 °C heat shield partition wall case study.

Fire doors

Order door leaf, core board, infill and seals as one tested set. Retrofit intumescent strips to existing exit doors without specialist tools.

Service penetrations

Seal every cable, pipe and duct through a rated wall or floor with sealant, collars, wraps or pillows so the compartment keeps its rating.

Where fire protection is required

  • High-rise residential and commercial buildings — stair and lift lobbies, shafts, corridors; see the NBCS 2026 checklist and the BIS National Building Code.
  • Hospitals and hotels — fire doors, smoke seals and fire-rated partitions on escape routes.
  • Data centers and BESS — compartment walls, penetration seals and battery fire barriers; see data center insulation and EV battery fire protection.
  • Industrial plants — fire walls around transformers, DG sets and process areas; microporous and calcium silicate heat shields.
  • Malls, airports and metro stations — fire curtains, rated ceilings and cable protection.

Fire protection FAQs

What is the difference between passive and active fire protection?

Passive fire protection is built into the structure — fire doors, fire-resistant boards, rated walls and ceilings, and seals — and works without power. Active fire protection needs detection or action, such as sprinklers, alarms and extinguishers. Buildings need both.

What materials are used for fire protection of walls and ceilings?

Non-combustible boards such as calcium silicate (650 °C and 1000 °C grades) and MgO board, fixed to steel studs with mineral wool infill. The rating comes from the tested assembly — board layers, infill and sealed joints — typically 60 to 120 minutes.

What does FD30, FD60 or FD120 mean?

It is the fire resistance of a door in minutes: an FD60 door holds back fire for 60 minutes in a standard test. Wedge fire door designs cover FD30 to FD120 to BS 476 Part 22 and EN 1634-1, using calcium silicate or MgO cores, mineral wool infill and intumescent seals.

How do intumescent seals work?

Intumescent strips fitted in the door frame or leaf edge expand up to 10 times their size when heated to 150–200 °C, closing the gap between door and frame so fire and hot smoke cannot pass. Smoke versions add a brush or fin that seals at room temperature.

Is calcium silicate board fire resistant?

Yes. Calcium silicate board is inorganic, asbestos-free and non-combustible (Class A1). Wedge supplies 650 °C and 1000 °C grades for fire walls, ceilings and fire door cores, cut to size.

Do you supply and install fire protection in Delhi NCR?

Yes. Wedge supplies fire doors, boards, seals and firestop systems from Faridabad and installs them with supervised crews across Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad. Call or WhatsApp +91 97175 06848 for a site visit.
