Soundproofing an existing door
If replacing the door is not an option, these steps — in order of impact — cut noise through an existing door. For the best result combine several of them.
- Replace a hollow-core door with a solid-core or pre-made acoustic door — the single biggest improvement.
- Seal the gaps: rubber or foam gaskets around the edges, an acoustic door sweep or drop seal at the bottom, and acoustic sealant around the frame.
- Add mass: fix sound proof sheets such as MLV to the door, then cover with a decorative panel or fabric.
- Reduce vibration: use a damping compound between added layers, and resilient fixings to isolate them from the leaf.
