Overview

An aerogel mat is silica aerogel locked into a flexible fibre web and supplied as a flat sheet or die-cut shape rather than a long roll. It gives the same nanoporous insulation as an aerogel blanket — pores smaller than the mean free path of air, so heat has almost no path to conduct through — in a format that drops straight onto an enclosure wall, a panel, a valve box or a battery tray.

The WedGel WAG650 grade is the flagship high-temperature mat from Wedge Industries Limited. It measures 0.018 W/m·K at 25 °C and 0.068 W/m·K at 600 °C (ASTM C177), serves continuously from −50 °C to +650 °C, weighs about 200 kg/m³ and repels over 99 % of liquid water while staying vapour-permeable. For the same heat loss it is typically 2 to 2.5 times thinner than mineral wool, which is why it is specified where space, weight or corrosion under insulation decide the design.

The mat pictured is supplied on a peel-off release liner for adhesive-backed fitting. The same WAG650 material is also available plain, aluminium-foil-laminated, PET-backed or faced with silica cloth, and is die-cut to drawing for OEM kits.

Aerogel mat price

WedGel aerogel mats are priced per m² by thickness and cut size. For project quantities of 100 m² and above, ex-works Faridabad and excluding 18 % GST, the WedGel range runs from ₹1,350/m² ($14) for thin ambient grades to ₹4,500/m² ($47) for thick and speciality grades; a 10 mm WAG650 mat sits at roughly ₹2,950–₹3,850/m² ($31–$40). Figures are indicative at ₹96 per US$ and updated 01-10-2026; sample orders under 20 m² cost 20–30 % more and orders above 1,000 m² are priced on request.

Applications

• Process pipework and tanks — wrap-on sheets for steam, hot oil and thermic fluid lines up to 650 °C, with hydrophobic performance that helps control corrosion under insulation.

Installation

1. Cut the mat with a sharp knife or shears; wear gloves, long sleeves and a dust mask, as dry aerogel sheds fine dust during cutting.
2. Clean the substrate of oil and loose scale. For adhesive-backed mats, peel the release liner and press on firmly from the centre outward at 10–40 °C.
3. Butt joints tightly; on hot equipment stagger the joints between layers. Use two layers of 10 mm rather than one of 20 mm around tight radii.
4. Secure plain mats with stainless-steel bands, wire or high-temperature tape, then fit a metal, foil or fabric outer cladding to protect the surface.
5. Do not compress the mat below 80 % of its thickness, as compression raises conductivity.
