What is a calcium silicate board?
A calcium silicate board is a rigid, asbestos-free insulation board made from calcium, silica and reinforcing fibres, manufactured to ASTM C533. It insulates to 650–1,200 °C while carrying load, with a thermal conductivity of about 0.060 W/m·K and compressive strength from 0.50 MPa. Unlike mineral wool, it is self-supporting: it needs no wire mesh on flat surfaces, holds its thickness under cladding and does not slump on vertical boiler walls.
It is non-combustible (Class A1), moisture and chemical resistant, dimensionally stable and machinable, which is why it is used both as furnace backing insulation and as a fire-door core. For the grade differences, see types of calcium silicate board.

Choose by service temperature first, then by density. Low-density grades insulate; high-density grades carry load and take machining.

What temperature can calcium silicate board withstand?

What is the thermal conductivity of calcium silicate board?
CalSil650LD measures ≤0.060 W/m·K at 25 °C at 230 kg/m³, and ≤0.062 W/m·K at 250 kg/m³. At higher mean temperatures it rises: ≤0.056 at 200 °C, ≤0.0923 at 371 °C and ≤0.1002 W/m·K at 538 °C.
Is calcium silicate board fireproof and asbestos-free?
Yes. Wedge boards are inorganic, non-combustible and classified Class A1, and they contain no asbestos. High-density grades such as FP1000 are used as certified fire-door cores in designs referencing BS 476 Part 22, EN 1634-1 and IS 3614.
Calcium silicate board or mineral wool: which should I use?
Use calcium silicate where the insulation must carry load, hold its thickness under cladding or reach above 700 °C, such as furnace backing, pipe supports and fire-rated partitions. Mineral wool is cheaper per m² and fine where nothing bears on the insulation.
What sizes and thicknesses are available?
Standard boards are supplied in 25 mm and 50 mm thicknesses, with slabs from 30–100 mm thick, 100–600 mm long and 100–300 mm wide, to tolerances of ±2 mm on length and width and ±1.5 mm on thickness. Fire-door sheets come in 600 × 300 mm, 600 × 150 mm and 1000 × 500 mm. Cut-to-size and machined parts are made to drawing.
Can calcium silicate board be used with molten aluminium?
Yes, with the non-wetting grades: HD900, Z140, M1000 and C45 for ladles, launders and holding furnaces, and the graphite-reinforced W-CMA, W-C18 and WL101 grades for transition plates, tips and filter boxes.
