Aerogel insulation blanket costs about ₹1,350–₹3,850 per m² ($14–$40 per m²) in India for 2027 project orders. A 5 mm ambient-grade blanket (up to 400 °C) starts around ₹1,350/m² ($14); a 10 mm 650 °C grade runs ₹2,950–₹3,850/m² ($31–$40). How much does aerogel insulation cost in India in 2027?

For project quantities (100 m² and above), silica aerogel blanket costs ₹1,350–₹2,150 per m² at 5 mm, ₹1,550–₹2,450 per m² at 6 mm and ₹2,450–₹3,850 per m² at 10 mm. The 650 °C grade costs roughly 20–25% more than the ambient grade at the same thickness.

Ambient grade here means WedGel WAG400 (−50 to +400 °C, 0.018 W/m·K at 25 °C). The 650 °C grade means WedGel WAG650 (−50 to +650 °C, 0.018 W/m·K at 25 °C and 0.068 W/m·K at 600 °C) or the budget WedGel ECO (up to 650 °C, 0.029 W/m·K at 25 °C). Other thicknesses from 1 mm to 50 mm are quoted on request.

Aerogel price per roll and per kg

Aerogel is sold by area, so a roll price is simply the m² price multiplied by the roll area. As an example, a 1.5 m × 30 m roll (45 m²) of 10 mm 650 °C blanket works out to ₹1,32,750–₹1,73,250 ($1,383–$1,805). Roll size varies by thickness; it is confirmed on your quotation.

Per kg, blanket aerogel works out to roughly ₹1,400–₹2,200 per kg ($15–$23 per kg). WedGel blankets weigh about 180–200 kg/m³, so 10 mm is about 1.8–2.0 kg/m². Buy blanket by m², not by kg. Per-kg prices you see online usually refer to aerogel powder or granules, which is a different product.

Sample, trade and project price tiers

Aerogel pricing is volume-led. The same 10 mm blanket can cost 30% more on a 10 m² sample than on a 500 m² project, because cutting, packing and freight are spread over fewer metres.

What drives the price of aerogel?

Four things set the price of aerogel blanket: thickness, temperature grade, order volume, and the import and currency costs built into every metre. Thickness and grade are chosen by the engineer; volume and timing are chosen by the buyer.

• Thickness. Price rises almost in line with thickness because the aerogel content rises with it. Going from 5 mm to 10 mm roughly doubles the cost per m², so ordering the right thickness matters more than negotiating the rate.
• Temperature grade. Blankets rated to 650 °C need a different fibre carrier and more processing than 400 °C grades. Do not pay for 650 °C on a 180 °C line; do not risk a 400 °C grade on a 550 °C line.
• Volume. See the tier table above. Combining several lines or plants into one order is the simplest way to reach project pricing.
• Import duty and currency. Much of the aerogel used in India contains imported silica precursor or blanket, so basic customs duty, 18% IGST and the rupee all feed through to price. The rupee is near ₹96 to the US dollar and has weakened about 9% over the last 12 months (Trading Economics, 18-09-2026). That is the main reason 2027 prices sit above older price lists.

Aerogel costs more per m² than mineral wool or calcium silicate because it is made by a slow supercritical or ambient-pressure drying process. It pays back where space is tight, where water gets in, or where the energy saved over a few years is worth more than the material.

Typically 10 mm of aerogel does the work of 40–50 mm of conventional insulation in the same duty. That thinner build-up means a smaller cladding diameter, less cladding sheet, lighter supports and insulation that fits on congested pipe racks and inside equipment guards. Aerogel is also hydrophobic (over 99% water repellency on WedGel grades), so it keeps its performance when it gets wet, which reduces the risk of corrosion under insulation.

The cost of a failed installation vs the cost of the material

The material is often the smaller part of an insulation job. Cladding, labour, scaffolding and plant downtime can equal or exceed the cost of the blanket, and they are paid again if the job has to be redone.

Most failures come from the same few causes: the wrong temperature grade on a hot line, gaps at joints and flanges, water getting past poorly sealed cladding, or a blanket with poor hydrophobicity that soaks up moisture. Each one means stripping and re-insulating, often during a shutdown you cannot extend.

Saving ₹200 per m² on an unproven blanket is a poor trade if it risks rework. When you compare quotes, ask each supplier for:

• A technical data sheet showing thermal conductivity at your operating temperature, not only at 25 °C
• A material test certificate (MTC) for the batch supplied
• Test standards met, for example ASTM C1728 for flexible aerogel blanket and ASTM C177 for thermal conductivity
• Hydrophobicity data and maximum service temperature
• Stock location and lead time
