Overview
A Wedge tile backer board replaces the three-trade build-up of insulation, waterproofing membrane and cement backer board with one lightweight panel. The closed-cell extruded polystyrene (XPS) core does not wick or absorb water; the cement facing gives a rigid, rough key that bonds directly to cementitious tile adhesives, screeds and renders.
Two facing grades are available on the same core. CSC XPS 250 has a calcium silicate cement facing — the premium, fire-retardant grade for floors, heavy-duty tiling and any board that may be left partly exposed. MXPS has a polymer-mortar facing — the economical grade for interior wet-area walls where the board is fully covered by tiles.
Both faces are symmetrical, so there is no wrong way up. Boards are scored and snapped with a trimming knife against a straight edge — no power tools or dust extraction on site.

Tile Backer Board price
Tile backer board is priced per board or per m² by thickness, core grade and facing. MXPS (polymer-mortar facing) is the economical interior grade; CSC XPS 250 (calcium silicate cement facing) is the premium fire-retardant grade. Pricing is on application and depends on quantity, thickness and delivery location — send the area and thickness for a firm quotation in ₹ INR and $ USD.
Minimum order is one pallet for supply within India and one 20′ GP container for export (indicatively 2,600 m² at 10 mm or 1,300 m² at 20 mm). Standard 1200 × 600 mm boards ship from stock.
Applications
- Bathroom, shower and wet-room walls — the waterproof substrate behind tiles, replacing tanking membrane plus cement board (6–12 mm, CCXP 30–35).
- Bathroom, shower and wet-room floors — combined insulation and tanking layer beneath tiles (6–10 mm over screed).
- Kitchen backsplashes, counters and vanity units (6–10 mm).
- Swimming-pool, spa and sauna wall linings and bath panels — unaffected by continuous humidity and chlorinated atmospheres (10–20 mm, CCXP 35–36).
- Refurbishment over existing tiles, timber or concrete without raising floor level — from 6 mm.
- Hotel, hospital and residential bathroom pods and prefab washrooms.
Typical build-up — tiled shower wall on masonry
| Property | Value | Test standard / note |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Wall tile + epoxy or polymer grout | Sealant at corners and tray | No separate tanking membrane required |
| 2. Flexible C2 S1 cement adhesive | Applied direct to the cement facing | EN 12004 |
| 3. Wedge tile backer board, 6–12 mm | Joints taped and sealed | Waterproof, insulated, rigid tile substrate |
| 4. Adhesive dabs + 5 anchors/m² | Or full adhesive bed where the wall is flat to 3 mm in 2 m | — |
| 5. Masonry or plastered wall | Sound, dry, primed if porous | — |
Installation
- Prepare the substrate — concrete, screed, masonry or plaster must be sound, clean, dry and flat to 3 mm in 2 m. Prime porous substrates.
- Cut to size — score both faces with a trimming knife against a straight edge and snap. Cut pipe holes with a hole saw.
- Bed in adhesive — apply flexible cementitious tile adhesive (C2 to EN 12004) with a 6–8 mm notched trowel and press the board firmly into the bed.
- Mechanically fix — on timber or steel studs fix through the board with corrosion-resistant screws and 35 mm washers at 300 mm centres; on masonry use adhesive dabs plus five anchors per m².
- Tape and seal — bed 100 mm alkali-resistant mesh tape in adhesive over every joint; apply flexible sealant at internal corners, perimeters and penetrations.
- Tile — tile directly onto the cement face with the same C2 adhesive. Use epoxy or cement-polymer grout in wet areas. Tile and adhesive load ≤ 62 kg/m².
- Do not use solvent-based adhesives or primers on the core, and seal any exposed cut edge in wet areas with adhesive.

Frequently asked questions
What is a tile backer board?
A tile backer board is a rigid, waterproof panel fixed to walls or floors as the substrate for tiles. Wedge tile backer boards have a closed-cell XPS foam core with a cement facing on both sides, so one board provides insulation, waterproofing and a tile-ready surface without a separate membrane or cement board.
Is XPS tile backer board waterproof?
Yes. The closed-cell XPS core absorbs 0.7 % or less water by volume in long-term immersion (ASTM C578) and the cement facing seals the surface. With joints taped and perimeters sealed the board itself is the tanking layer in showers and wet rooms.
Which thickness of tile backer board should I use?
Use 6 mm for refurbishment over existing tiles or where floor level cannot rise, 10 to 12 mm for shower and bathroom walls on masonry, and 10 to 20 mm for floors, underfloor heating and pool surrounds. Any thickness from 6 to 100 mm can be supplied.
How much tile weight can the board carry?
Maximum tile loading is 62 kg per square metre tested to CERAM 121107, which covers large-format porcelain and natural stone with adhesive. Adhesive bond to the facing is 0.3 N/mm² to BS EN 1348.
What is the difference between CSC XPS 250 and MXPS tile backer board?
Both use the same Wedge CCXP core. CSC XPS 250 has a calcium silicate cement facing and is the premium, fire-retardant grade for floors, heavy tiling and boards that may be partly exposed. MXPS has a polymer-mortar facing and is the economical grade for interior wet-area walls that are fully tiled.
What is the minimum order and lead time?
Standard 1200 × 600 mm boards ship from stock with a minimum order of one pallet within India. Export orders are a minimum of one 20-foot container, with mixed thicknesses accepted. Project and cut-to-size quantities are produced to order in three to four weeks ex-works.
